Classical Periodization

Classical periodization is the linear progression of training from base to race form in fixed, sequential training phases that build on one another.

Definition

“Classical periodization” is the linear structuring of training into consecutive phases that lead from a broad base through specific build phases to race form. The model goes back to the work of Lev Matveyev in the 1960s and is also called “traditional periodization”.

The core idea: volume first, intensity later. Each phase prepares the next, and the load becomes more specific over the season until it peaks in the racing phase.

Why it matters

Classical periodization is the most widespread planning model in endurance sport because it is simple, easy to follow and well suited to a season with one clear main goal. The linear sequence reduces the risk of training too intensely too early.

Its weakness is rigidity. The template treats athletes the same regardless of their actual deficits and works poorly for seasons with several peaks. Individual periodization addresses exactly this.

Depending on form and goals, the phases are weighted differently. For an athlete with little training history, Base 1 may run several weeks longer; an experienced athlete may move to Base 2 after a single block. This weighting is one of the main tasks of coaches and requires knowledge of how quickly their athletes adapt.

How obseed measures it

obseed represents training phases in the plan and sets weekly and phase volumes against the sessions actually completed. Time in zones per phase shows whether a base phase really took place in the base range or whether intensity crept in.

The reference for zones and intensities is the stored set of performance parameters. A diagnostic test at the start and end of the base phases shows whether the build-up had the desired effect before the intense phases begin.

Example

A cyclist plans a race in 28 weeks and distributes the phases as follows:

Volume rises to 12 hours by Base 3 and falls afterwards while intensity increases. In Base 1 over 85 % of time is in zones 1 and 2; in Build 2 it is still about 60 %, with the rest split between threshold and above. Every fourth week is a recovery week at about 60 % of the volume.
