Individual Periodization
Individual periodization is the planning of training phases according to diagnostically determined needs of one athlete rather than a fixed template.
Definition
“Individual periodization” is a training plan in which the order, duration and content of training phases are derived from the athlete’s current state and deficits. It does not follow a predefined linear sequence like classical periodization; it deploys phases where the diagnostics show the greatest need for development.
The starting point is always an assessment: performance diagnostics, training history, capacity to absorb load, and the long-term goal. From this comes a plan that sets one clear emphasis between two diagnostic tests and is re-evaluated at the next test.
Why it matters
A fixed template treats everyone the same. An athlete with an excellent base but weak threshold power loses weeks in a base phase she does not need. An athlete with high VO2max but poor fat-metabolism economy gains little from further interval blocks.
Individual periodization is particularly useful when the goal is long-term development over several seasons. It allows different focal points to be defined between diagnostic tests and worked on deliberately, always with the distant goal in view.

The price is complexity. This kind of planning requires close knowledge of the athlete, regular objective measurements, and the willingness to change the plan when the data demand it.
How obseed measures it
obseed represents training phases in the plan and sets them against the sessions actually completed. The stored performance parameters from a diagnostic test provide the reference for zones and intensities.
Trend variables such as fitness, fatigue, time in zones and the coupling of heart rate and power show whether the chosen emphasis is working. If the parameters in the next diagnostic test do not move in the desired direction, that is a signal to adjust the focus.
Example
A triathlete with a key goal in 18 months completes a metabolic test on the bike in October. Results: VO2max 58 ml/min/kg (very good), power at the second ventilatory threshold 245 W, but fat oxidation already drops sharply from 165 W.
A classical plan would now prescribe a multi-week base phase followed by a build. Individual periodization instead sets a 10-week block focused on fat metabolism: long sessions at 150 to 165 W, deliberately without threshold intervals.
The follow-up test in January shows whether the point at which fat oxidation drops has moved upward, say to 190 W. Only then does the next block follow, this time focused on threshold power. Every phase has a measurable goal, every transition a data basis.
