Recording Sessions

Recording sessions means capturing a workout with a sports watch or head unit; recording rate and lap settings determine how well it can be analysed.

Definition

“Recording sessions” refers to capturing a workout or session with a sports watch, a head unit or another wearable so that time, distance, heart rate, power and other metrics exist as a data file. The quality of that recording decides whether a session can be analysed objectively at all. Two device settings are decisive: the recording rate and the lap function.

Why it matters

A recording that stores a data point only every few seconds, or that does not mark intervals as separate laps, can hardly be evaluated cleanly afterwards. Interval averages, decoupling or power curves are only as precise as the raw data they are computed from. The more complete and consistent the recording, the more objective the subsequent analysis.

“Smart” recording looks sensible at first glance because it saves storage. For analysis, however, one-second recording is far better, because it actually captures short power spikes and transitions instead of interpolating them.

How obseed measures it

obseed imports the recordings from connected wearables and devices and evaluates them at one-second resolution wherever the data exists at that resolution. Laps are carried over as segments: each lap appears with its own averages for power, pace and heart rate and can be analysed individually.

If a structured workout is loaded on the device, the lap button assigns each step to its category, i.e. interval, rest, recovery or new block. That assignment makes it easier in obseed to compare the planned session with what was actually done. What the device did not capture, obseed cannot reconstruct; the device settings are therefore the first step of any clean data analysis.

Example

A runner has auto lap set to 1 km on her watch and wants to run 5 × 3 min intervals with 2 min jog recovery.

Without a structured workout loaded, she presses the lap button 750 m into the first kilometre to start the first interval. The watch ends the running 750 m lap and begins a new, full kilometre. The 3 min interval (roughly 800 m) ends in the middle of that lap; the lap average blends interval and recovery jog and is useless for analysis.

With auto lap disabled or a structure loaded, every button press starts exactly one segment: 3 min interval, 2 min rest, 3 min interval. In obseed, five interval laps then appear with clean averages, say 3:45 min/km at 172 bpm, plus four recovery laps at 5:30 min/km and 140 bpm. Only this separation allows a statement about whether the intervals were completed in the intended range.
