For other endurance sports, watches offer installable or custom sport profiles whose recording and auto-lap settings should be adapted to the discipline.
Definition
“Recording sessions: other endurance sports” refers to capturing workouts in disciplines beyond cycling, running and swimming, such as cross-country skiing, rowing, ski touring, inline skating or hiking, using a matching sport profile on the watch. Many watches allow further sport profiles to be installed directly or, where none exists, to be created from scratch. The profile determines which sensors, recording and auto-lap settings apply to the session.
Why it matters
If a ski tour is recorded in the running profile, neither the auto-lap distance nor the pace display nor the sport in the analysis fits. The session lands in the wrong category, its load is evaluated against the wrong threshold, and a comparison with earlier sessions of the same discipline is impossible.

Installing an existing profile brings its intended recording and auto-lap settings along, and they can then be adjusted as desired. Creating a custom profile usually allows the applied parameters to be chosen freely. In both cases: record every second, and choose auto lap so that it matches the structure of the workout.
How obseed measures it
obseed takes the sport from the recording’s profile and assigns the session to the corresponding discipline. For load calculation, obseed uses whichever channels are available for that sport: power for rowing and cross-country skiing with a power meter, otherwise heart rate relative to the stored reference values.
For disciplines without their own performance metrics, heart rate becomes the main control variable. Here it matters especially that the reference comes from a metabolic assessment in a comparable form of exercise, because threshold heart rate differs between sports. Notes on equipment, terrain and conditions help to classify the session correctly later.
Example
An athlete goes on a ski tour with 1,200 m of ascent. She has installed the “ski touring” profile on her watch and switched auto lap from 1 km of distance to 100 m of elevation gain.
The recording yields twelve ascent laps of 100 vertical metres each. Vertical speed sits at 620 to 680 m/h at 148 to 156 bpm, with a drop to 540 m/h in the ninth lap while heart rate climbs to 160 bpm.
In obseed, the session is stored as a ski tour with 2 h 05 min of ascent and 35 min of descent. The dip in lap nine coincides with a steep, icy section that she records in the notes. Without the adapted profile, the watch would have delivered a “run” at 8:40 min/km with distance laps from which neither vertical speed nor the dip could have been read.
