Recovery Phase
The recovery phase is the 3–14 day period directly after an important race in which training is cut sharply so muscles and metabolism can regenerate fully.
Definition
The “recovery phase” is the training phase directly after an important race in which load is reduced drastically for 3–14 days. It follows the race and the taper and leads into the transition or straight into the next build.
How long it lasts depends on the race distance and on the individual. After a 10 km run three days are often enough; after a full-distance triathlon some athletes need two weeks before they are ready for new stimuli.
Why it matters
The subjective sense of recovery is misleading. As soon as the muscles stop aching, you feel recovered, but muscle is only the fastest repair site. A calorie deficit of several thousand kilocalories, depleted glycogen stores, oxidative stress at cell level and an irritated immune system take longer, especially after long races.
Anyone who ignores this deeper fatigue and returns to full training after four days carries it into the next phase. Over a season this adds up to chronic exhaustion that ends in overtraining and, in the worst case, burnout.

The first two to three days are completely training-free or limited to walking and easy swimming. After that, short sessions in Z1, without a plan and without targets.
Signs the phase is working: resting heart rate drops back to the pre-taper baseline, HRV returns to its normal range, appetite normalises, and the desire to train comes back on its own.
Signs it has gone on too long: all markers have been normal for several days but the pause continues, weight rises noticeably, or restlessness increases. Then the transition or the next build is due.
How obseed measures it
In this phase obseed relies mainly on wearable data: resting heart rate, HRV, sleep duration and sleep quality. Comparing them with your individual range from the weeks before the race shows when the body is back at baseline, regardless of how the legs feel.
From the race itself, obseed calculates the metabolic load from the measured zones and the duration. Four hours at VT2 leave a different mark than four hours in Z1, and the recommended recovery duration follows from that, not from a generic table.

Total volume around 5 hours, 40% of a normal week, distribution 100/0/0. If HRV is back within its range on day 10, the transition begins, or the next build if a second A-race is planned.
