Mesocycles

A mesocycle is a training block of three to six weeks inside a macrocycle, built around one clearly defined training emphasis such as base or threshold.

Definition

A “mesocycle” is the middle planning level of periodisation. It divides the macrocycle into blocks of usually three to six weeks, each with a clear emphasis such as aerobic base, threshold work, or race specificity.

A mesocycle is itself made up of several microcycles. The typical pattern is two or three loading weeks followed by one recovery week in which the body absorbs the stimuli.

Why it matters

The mesocycle is the level at which adaptation actually happens. A single stimulus changes little, but three weeks of consistent work on one emphasis shifts thresholds and metabolism measurably.

Changing the focus every week scatters the effort. Keeping it for months leads to stagnation. The mesocycle is the compromise: long enough for adaptation, short enough for variety and control.

How obseed measures it

At the end of each mesocycle obseed compares planned and completed load and checks whether the intensity distribution matched the intended emphasis. A base block in which 30 % of the time was spent above the first ventilatory threshold has missed its goal even if the hours add up.

The recovery week is checked against Training Stress Balance (TSB). If it does not turn positive, the recovery was too weak. The thresholds that define the zones come from spiroergometry; an FTP estimate from a 20-minute test would shift the zone boundaries by several percent and distort the analysis.

Example

A cyclist completes a threshold mesocycle in a 3:1 pattern. His second ventilatory threshold is 265 W.

Time at threshold rises by 15 minutes per week, and so does load. In week 4 volume drops by about 45 % and TSB turns positive. The block ends with a control test; only then are the zones adjusted for the next mesocycle.
